Located in the Lambeth borough, on the south bank of the Thames River, Waterloo station is the busiest and largest London railway station. It is also called London Waterloo, located only a few minutes from the Tate Modern Museum. It was named Waterloo in honor of the victory at the Battle of Waterloo, where Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated. One of its most famous features is the Victory Arch, which was installed as a way to commemorate World War I and every staff member who tragically died in this war.

With 99.4 million journeys served each year, Waterloo isn’t only London but also Britain’s busiest railway station. Waterloo also happens to be London’s second busiest underground station, with 100.3 million tube journeys provided each year. But it didn’t always use to be this way: when London Waterloo first opened in 1848, only 14 trains came through the station daily! Another fun fact: the station once hosted a cinema set near platform one and opened from 1934 to 1970.

Waterloo station includes an underground station served by the London tube. London Waterloo is also accessible through buses 1, 26, 59, 68, 139, 172, 176, 188, 507, and 521. If you can, make the most of your time in Waterloo station and go see Waterloo Bridge and Westminster Bridge, both located within walking distance!
