Learn more about Florence Santa Maria Novella Station

Located in Piazza del Stazione, Florence Santa Maria Novella station (Firenze Santa Maria Novella) is Florence’s central railway station and has a rich history. The station hosts over 59 million travelers annually and is considered one of Italy's busiest train stations. It first opened to the public in 1848 and was known as Maria Antonia (named after Princess Maria Antonia of the Two Sicilles). However, after the unification of Italy, the station's name was changed. Santa Maria Novella was renamed in honor of the nearby church of the same name.

Later in 1932, the Santa Maria Novella station was designed by a group of architects known as the Gruppo Toscana. Then, between 1932 and 1934, the station was rebuilt. The building's plan looks like the symbol of Benito Mussolini's National Fascist Party, but the pre-existing station forced that shape.

Today, Santa Maria Novella station serves regional trains connecting to other cities, such as Livorno, Lucca and Viareggio, and Faenza.
