Learn more about Florence's city center

Originally founded by the Romans in 59 BC, the central part of Florence began to take shape as we know it in the medieval period when it became central for art, architecture, and culture. During this era, many of its most famous landmarks were built, including the Duomo and the Palazzo Vecchio. The Renaissance period also had a significant impact on Florence. It was also during this moment that many of Florence's most beautiful buildings were constructed, including the Palazzo Pitti and the Uffizi Gallery. The period also saw the emergence of some of the most famous artists and thinkers in history, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Galileo Galilei. The influence of these eras, when Florence was one of the most important cities in Europe and the world, is still evident. The heart of Florence is a stunning historic setting where you'll find amazing art, architecture, and culture, making it a UNESCO world heritage site. There’s so much to do and see here. Check out the Duomo (cathedral), with its iconic red-tiled dome and impressive facade. You can climb to the top of the dome for breathtaking views, but be prepared for a steep climb up narrow stairs! Or walk along the Ponte Vecchio, a bridge crossing the Arno River famous for the renaissance buildings on the bridge, including shops selling jewelry, art, and souvenirs. Or, see the Uffizi Gallery, one of the most famous art museums in the world. It has a collection that includes works by Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Leonardo da Vinci and is housed in a beautiful Renaissance building. Wherever you go in Florence, you'll be surrounded by beauty and historic charm.
