What can I do during a 12-hour layover in Amsterdam?

12 hours is plenty of time to explore a bit of the city! Start your Amsterdam layover by taking a quick train ride from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Centraal Station, which takes about 15-20 minutes. Visiting a museum is a must-do, we recommend the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum for the Dutch art and history. Afterward, take a walk or a canal cruise through the Jordaan district and admire the city's architecture. Once you get the munchies, try some traditional Dutch cuisine at a local restaurant or visit the Foodhallen, an indoor food market with diverse culinary options. In the afternoon, tour the Anne Frank House, where you can learn about the poignant history of Anne Frank and her family during World War II. If you have time left, visit the vibrant Albert Cuyp Market or take a bike ride through Vondelpark. Once your layover comes to an end, head back to Amsterdam Centraal station and catch the train back to the airport.

What is the best way to travel around Amsterdam?

The best way to travel around Amsterdam is by using its efficient and extensive public transportation system, which includes trams, buses, and metros operated by GVB. Trams are particularly convenient for getting around the city center and major attractions. Biking is also a popular and quintessentially Dutch way to explore the city, with many bike rental shops available. But make sure your biking skills are up to par to keep up with the traffic! Walking is also a great way to get around, especially in the city center.

How to get from Centraal Station Amsterdam to Schiphol Airport?

The most convenient and fastest option is to take a direct train. Trains run frequently, with departures every 10-15 minutes, and the journey takes about 15-20 minutes. You can purchase tickets at the station from ticket machines or the service desk. Another option is to take a taxi or rideshare service, which might be more comfortable if you have a lot of luggage, but it will be more expensive and potentially slower during peak traffic hours.
