How does Cairns compare to Port Douglas for nature tourism?

Cairns is more budget- and backpacker-friendly with better transport links, while Port Douglas is quieter and more upscale. Both offer access to the reef and rainforest, but Port Douglas is closer to the Daintree and less commercial.

Is visiting Cairns in the wet season recommended?

Cairns’ wet season (Nov–April) brings humidity, afternoon rain, and the possibility of cyclones—but also lush landscapes and fewer crowds. It's still a good time for reef tours, though some inland hikes may be limited due to flooding.
